Every year, before Christmas, it has become a tradition for my friends to have a little get-together. Everyone is going home for the holidays and we know we will terribly miss each other. Though we don’t want to take part in cleaning up the living room on Christmas Day, family comes first. The plane tickets were bought and presents for family and godkids were wrapped. We wanted a quiet place for ourselves. Away from crowded malls where everyone is trying to finish their Christmas shopping. So we agreed to have lunch at Gusto Mare.
Gusto Mare has an insta-worthy ambiance. The orange iron chairs were padded with seat cushions. But sitting in these excellently made seats are like wearing heels. They look pretty but are truly uncomfortable. On the other side of the table is a couch which provides more physical ease and relaxation.
The della casa is a perfect afternoon snack. The pizza crust is perfectly baked and very crispy. Every bite is a treat of basil’s aroma – a hint of star anise, pepper and mint. The dip didn’t even have the chance to cool before everything was gone.
The Frittura Di Calamari is delicious. The chef has perfectly cooked the squid until it is soft but the batter is crispy. It’s a must-try for seafood lovers.
The cream and pumpkin soup Zucca was too salty for my friends. It wasn’t the kind of soup worth shamelessly licking the bowl for.
Perhaps because of the variety of food to choose from, we stick to what’s familiar. Diane’s love for breakfast food shows as she devours Gusto Mare’s Pancakes and Bacon. The meal comes with my favorite cream cheese and maple syrup. Everybody clamored for more bacon. Diane gave in eventually and ordered more.
In the world of smart phones and portable computers, it has always been a mystery for some cooks or chefs how to make fries without the oil seeping in. This one is a no go.
The pasta dishes were our favorites. Both the tuna spaghetti and the carbonara are delicious. The tuna spaghetti is very light but fills up your stomach just the same. You can’t go wrong with the creamy carbonara. Add the ham and bam! Explosion.
The cappuccino was too bitter for me. It was served in a small cup but I wasn’t even able to finish drinking it. The cold variety, they call cafe fredo, on the other hand was too light for my friends and me. It tasted like water and milk. I guess the barista did not take into account what the ice cubes melting would mean.
